Chief Justice Michael Gibbons announced the Nevada Commission on Judicial Selection has received five applications from individuals who wish to fill the judicial opening in Washoe County’s Second Judicial District Court, Family Division. This judicial selection will fill the seat made available by the retirement of the Honorable Frances M. Doherty in Dept. 12. The applicants in alphabetical order are:
Husna Fatima Alikhan, 51, Attorney, Alikhan Law Office, LLC, Las Vegas
Aimee Elizabeth Banales, 49, Master, Second Judicial District Court, Family Division, Reno
Peter Joseph Sferrazza, 73, Justice of the Peace, Reno Justice Court, Reno
Sandra A. Unsworth, 59, Attorney, Law Office of Sandra A. Unsworth, Verdi
First Judicial District Court and Carson City Justice/Municipal Court
The First Judicial District Court and the Carson City Justice/Municipal Court are accepting Letters of Interest from licensed Nevada attorneys who are in good standing to perform legal services for indigent defendants when the State Public Defender’s Office has declared a conflict. The contract term is January 1, 2020 through June 30, 2020. A new contract term beginning July 1, 2020 through June 30, 2023 will be available to apply for. Compensation is approximately, $10,488 per month for the existing contract.
The conflict attorneys are appointed an average of 135 new cases per year, including Juvenile and 432(B) cases. A selection committee will review the letters of interest and make a recommendation to the Carson City Board of Supervisors for final approval.
